What is Aerial Fiber Optic Cable?
An aerial fiber optic cable is an insulated cable usually containing all fibers required for a telecommunication line, which is suspended between utility poles or electricity pylons as it may even be lashed to a wire rope messenger strand with a small gauge wire. The strand is tensioned to satisfactorily withstand the weight of the cable for the span length, and it used on any climatic hazard such as ice, snow, water, and wind. Aerial Cable Types
Based on the installation method, the aerial cable can be classified into two types: self-supporting and catenary wire.
Self-Supporting Aerial Cable: Self-supporting aerial cable has cable bonded to insulated steel or all-dielectric messenger for support. Examples of Self-supporting aerial cable types are all-dielectric self-supporting (ADSS) and figure-8 cables.ADSS is an all-dielectric (without mental elements inside the cable) self-supporting cable. It's usually used together with a power line or in an area where lighting frequently occurs, while figure-8 its self-supporting messenger wire is stranded steel wires, which is mental, and to some extent structure of the fig.8 cable, the central strength member could be either steel wire or FRP. Non self-supporting aerial cable need to be hanged under a messenger wire.
Catenary Wire Aerial Cable: Catenary wire aerial cable is common outdoor loose-tube cable that can be lashed to a messenger or another cable (common in CATV).
Based on the structures and materials of the aerial cable, it can be divided into three main types: GYTC8S, GYXTC8S, and GYXTC8Y.
GYTC8S: GYTC8S is a typical self-supporting outdoor fiber optic cable. It's suitable for aerial and duct and buried applications. It provides excellent mechanical and environmental performance, steel-wire strength member ensures tensile strength, corrugated steel tape, and the PE outer sheath ensures crush resistance, water blocking system to improve the waterproof ability, small cable diameter, and low dispersion and attenuation features.
GYXTC8Y : GYXTC8Y is a light self-supporting cable with the figure-8 shape in the cross-section that is suitable for installation in the aerial environment for long-haul communications and duct and buried applications. It provides high strength loose tube that is hydrolysis resistant, excellent mechanical and environmental performances, small cable diameter, low dispersion and attenuation, medium Density Polyethylene (PE) Jacket, and low friction installation features.
GYXTC8S: GYXTC8S is also suitable for installation in the aerial environment for long-haul communications. It provides excellent mechanical and environmental performances, corrugated steel tape and the PE outer sheath ensure crush resistance, water blocking system to improve the waterproof ability, small cable diameter, and Low dispersion and attenuation features.
Applications Scenarios
The aerial cable is used to carry electronic signaling such as telephone communications, cable service, and even as part of the electrical power distribution system within the local community. In addition, aerial cables are used in outdoor aerial applications, long-haul and local area networks (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN), subscriber network systems, junction communication systems, CATV, and computer networks system.
